An underwater archaeological study underway at Arade River has already produced an impressive discovery of a relic believed to be over 2,000 years old – an amphora believed to be from the 1st or 2nd century BC was found by divers at the bottom of the river.

According to Portimão Museum, it was produced somewhere along the Tyrrhenian Coast of the Italian Peninsula and was used to transport wine.

The study is being carried out by researchers at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa and Universidade dos Açores with the help of the local museum.
